How to Read Frozen Food Labels: A Simple Guide for Indian Shoppers
The label on a frozen food pack tells you far more than the brand name and picture. Knowing what to look for helps you pick safer, better-value products and avoid common disappointments. Here is a plain-language guide to the important parts of a typical Indian frozen food label.
The veg and non-veg symbol
Indian packaged food must carry a mark showing whether it is vegetarian or non-vegetarian: a green dot inside a square for vegetarian, and a brown or red dot inside a square for non-vegetarian. Look at it every time, even for familiar brands, as some products come in both versions.
The FSSAI licence number
Packaged food sold in India should display the FSSAI logo and a 14-digit licence or registration number of the manufacturer. It does not guarantee taste, but its absence is a warning sign. If a pack has no manufacturer details or looks like an unlabelled bag, it is better to avoid it.
Best before and use by dates
You will usually see a manufacturing or packing date and a best-before or use-by date. For frozen food, the date assumes the product was stored continuously at the recommended temperature. A pack that has been left out and refrozen may not be as good, even if the date is far away. Choose packs with comfortable time left, and avoid buying large quantities of products close to their date.
Storage instructions
Look for a line such as "store at -18°C or below". Some products are chilled rather than frozen, so the instruction matters. Some packs also state how long the product lasts in a freezer compartment of a home refrigerator versus a deep freezer. A small single-door fridge freezer is not as cold or stable as a standalone deep freezer, so its safe storage time is shorter.
Net weight and drained weight
Net weight is the weight of the contents. For products like frozen fish or prawns that carry a coating of ice (called glaze), you may also see drained weight, the weight after the ice melts. Glaze protects seafood from drying out, but too much of it means you are paying for water. Compare the price per kilogram of drained weight where it is shown.
Ingredients list
Ingredients are listed from the largest amount to the smallest. For a chicken nugget, you would hope to see chicken as the first ingredient, not flour or water. Look at the order, and notice how much of the product is coating versus meat. Check allergens, which are usually shown in bold or in a separate statement, covering items like wheat, milk, soy, eggs, fish, shellfish and nuts.
Nutrition information
The nutrition table is usually given per 100 g. When comparing products, use this per-100 g column rather than per serving, as serving sizes differ between brands. Check calories, fat, sodium and protein. Pre-fried snacks tend to be higher in fat and salt, so they suit occasional meals rather than daily eating.
Cooking instructions
This part is more useful than people think. It tells you whether the product should be cooked from frozen, the oil or air-fryer method, the time and the target temperature. Following these directions is the easiest way to get good results and a safe product, especially for raw items like seekh kebabs.
Signs of a pack that has been mishandled
- Heavy frost or a solid lump of ice inside, indicating thawing and refreezing.
- Pieces stuck together in one block when the product should be free-flowing, such as fries or popcorn chicken.
- Soft or squashed packs, or liquid at the bottom.
- Faded print or damaged seals.
Check the shop too
Labels matter, but so does where you buy. Look at the freezer the pack came from: is it clean, properly cold, and not overstuffed? Is the pack below the freezer's load line? A seller who handles frozen food properly is as important as what is printed on the pack.
A quick checklist before you buy
- Green or brown dot correct for your needs.
- FSSAI number and manufacturer details present.
- Comfortable best-before date.
- No frost, ice lumps or soft spots.
- Price compared per kilogram, not per pack.
