Air Fryer Guide: Cooking Frozen Nuggets, Kebabs, Fries and More

Cooking TipsBy the BURAAK FROZEN FOOD teamPublished October 8, 20263 min read

The air fryer has become a staple in many Indian kitchens, and frozen snacks are what it does best. It crisps coated food with a fraction of the oil of deep frying, and there is no thawing. This guide shares the technique behind consistently good results. Times vary by brand and model, so treat them as starting points and always follow the instructions printed on the pack.

The basic method that works for most snacks

  1. Preheat for 3 to 5 minutes. A hot basket starts crisping the coating immediately instead of slowly warming it.
  2. Cook from frozen. Do not thaw breaded items; thawing makes coatings soggy.
  3. Arrange in a single layer. Items should not overlap. Cook in batches if needed.
  4. Shake or flip halfway. This gives even colour on all sides.
  5. Check the centre. Cut one piece open to confirm it is steaming hot throughout.

Typical timings

These are rough ranges at around 180°C to 200°C. Your air fryer's power will change them.

Crispier results: small habits

A light spray of oil. Pre-fried products already contain oil, so most do not need any. Items with a dry crumb coating, such as home-breaded cutlets, brown better with a quick spritz of oil.

Do not crowd the basket. Hot air has to circulate. A packed basket produces pale, steamed food.

Use parchment sparingly. Perforated liners are fine, but a solid sheet blocks airflow beneath the food.

Let items rest for a minute. The coating sets and stays crisp when it comes out of the basket.

Cooking kebabs without drying them out

Seekh kebabs are made from minced meat, so they can dry out if overcooked. Cook at a slightly lower temperature, around 180°C, for a bit longer rather than blasting them at maximum heat. Brush lightly with oil or butter, and rest them for two minutes before serving. A squeeze of lemon and sliced onions make them taste like they came from a grill.

Keep your air fryer clean

Grease and crumbs build up quickly with frozen snacks. Wash the basket and tray after every few uses; leftover grease can smoke and give food a stale smell. Wipe the heating element area gently once a week when the unit is cool and unplugged.

Mistakes to avoid

Serving ideas

Air-fried nuggets and popcorn chicken go well with a quick mint-mayo dip or a spicy tomato chutney. Fish fingers make a good wrap filling with shredded cabbage and sauce. Seekh kebabs can be tucked into a paratha with onions and chutney for an easy dinner. For kids, a mixed plate of nuggets, fries and a veg tikki feels like a treat but takes under 20 minutes.

Final tip

Write down the exact time and temperature that worked for each product in your own air fryer. After a couple of tries you will know it by heart, and frozen snacks will come out right every time.
