Planning a Party Menu with Frozen Food: Quantities, Timing and Tips
Hosting a birthday, a family get-together, an Eid or Diwali evening or a casual match-day gathering shouldn't mean spending the whole event in the kitchen. Frozen starters are one of the easiest ways to feed a crowd, because you can buy them ahead, cook them in batches and serve them hot. This guide helps you plan quantities, timing and a balanced menu.
Step 1: Know your numbers
Start with how many people are coming and how long the event lasts. A useful rule is to plan snacks in three layers: starters, a main item and something sweet. If frozen snacks are your starters, a quick estimate is:
- Cocktail-style party with a full dinner to follow: about 4 to 6 pieces of snacks per person.
- Snacks as the main meal: about 8 to 12 pieces per person, or 250 to 300 g per head.
- Children's party: about 5 to 8 pieces per child, with plenty of fries.
Round up a little. It is better to have a few leftovers (they freeze or reheat well) than to run out.
Step 2: Mix textures and diets
A good spread has variety. For instance:
- One crispy chicken item, such as nuggets or popcorn chicken.
- One kebab or tikka-style item, such as seekh kebabs.
- One seafood item, if your guests eat it, like fish fingers.
- Two or three vegetarian choices, such as aloo tikki, cheese corn nuggets, veg samosas or spring rolls.
- French fries for the kids and for balance.
Always ask about dietary needs ahead of time, and keep vegetarian and non-vegetarian food cooked and served separately, with separate tongs and plates.
Step 3: Order and store early
Place your order a day or two before the event so you aren't rushing, and ask for delivery timing that matches your freezer space. Make room in advance: party quantities can overflow a small freezer. Keep the packs sealed until you are ready to cook, and don't thaw anything breaded.
Step 4: Build a cooking schedule
The biggest challenge is serving everything hot at the same time. Work backward from the time you want food on the table:
- Prepare dips and sides first. Chutneys, mint mayo and sliced onions with lemon can be made hours earlier.
- Cook raw kebabs first. They take longer and hold well in a warm oven.
- Cook crispy items in batches in the air fryer, oven or pan, close to serving time.
- Finish with fries. They go soft quickest, so cook them last.
Keeping food hot and safe
Cooked food shouldn't sit at room temperature for long. Keep a baking tray in an oven at about 90°C to 100°C and move batches there as they finish; leave the door slightly open for crisp items so steam can escape. Throw away cooked food that has been out for more than two hours, and in hot weather, one hour. Reheat leftovers until steaming hot.
Use more than one cooking appliance
If you have an oven, an air fryer and a stove, use all three at once. Oven trays take large batches of nuggets and kebabs, an air fryer handles quick crisping, and a pan or tawa can cook parathas for wraps. Parallel cooking cuts total time dramatically.
Make it feel special
- Dips and sauces: a trio of mint chutney, tamarind and a creamy dip adds variety to simple snacks.
- Wrap station: set out hot parathas, kebabs, onions, sliced cucumber and sauces, and let guests build their own rolls.
- Presentation: serve on wooden boards or platters with lemon wedges and fresh coriander.
- Labels: little cards marking veg and non-veg save awkward questions.
After the party
Refrigerate cooked leftovers within two hours and eat them within a day or two. Unopened frozen packs can go straight back into the freezer. Don't refreeze cooked items that have been served and left out.
A sample plan for 15 guests
For a casual dinner with starters, you might buy about 1 kg of chicken nuggets or popcorn chicken, 750 g of seekh kebabs, 500 g of fish fingers, 750 g of vegetarian snacks, 1 kg of fries and a pack of laccha parathas. That gives a wide selection, a few extras and enough for second helpings.
